Fetch is a multi-user, mixed media database application. Kagema is pleased to bring you this program, making the use of the PhotoLib™ CD ROM easy and convenient. Use Aldus Fetch to find your favourite photographs and image files on the PhotoLib CD. Once located, items can be copied, previewed, placed, printed or opened by another application.

Quick & Easy Instructions
To open the PhotoLib™ Catalog with Fetch, you can either:
1) Launch the “Aldus Fetch™1.0 Browser” application found ion the PhotoLib™ CD-ROM. Select “Open…” from the “File” menu and select the “PhotoLib™ Catalog” document found in the root level of the PhotoLib™.
or
2) Double click on the “PhotoLib™ Catalog” document on the PhotoLib™ CD ROM.
Once the catalog is open, the “PhotoLib™ Catalog • Find” dialog box appears. Click on the “Find All” button to open a window containing all of the images found on the PhotoLib CD ROM. Or, you can enter specific keywords to locate only certain images related to those keywords. For more information on finding images, please refer to the “Search Menu” and “Find Dialog” section of this Read Me First! document.
To preview an image in the “PhotoLib™ Catalog”, double click on the thumbnail of the image or choose “Preview” form the “Item” menu. A preview will appear in a new window.
To view more information about an image in the “PhotoLib™ Catalog”, double click on the text below the thumbnail of the image or choose “Get Info” from the “Item” menu. A new window will appear with information about the selected image, including location, creator, type, file size, creation date and a list of keywords associated with the image.
Please read the rest of this Read Me First! document to familiarize yourself with the features and commands of the Fetch Browser. This document is divided into the following sections: “The File Menu”, “The Edit Menu”, “The Item Menu”, “The Search Menu”, “The View Menu”, “The Window Menu”, “The Find Window” & “The Preferences Window”.
You will find that Fetch is a very intuitive, easy to understand application. There is extensive System 7.0 Balloon Help™ built into Fetch. Should you need any information about the operation of Fetch or using the “PhotoLib™ Catalog”, be sure to refer to this document and the Balloon Help first.
The File Menu
Use these commands to create, open, print, set defaults, get information about Fetch documents and quit the Fetch application.
Open…
Opens an existing catalog or project document. You have the option of declaring the document you open as the “default document” in the dialog box that appears.
Open Project…
Opens an existing project document. You have the option of declaring the project you open as the “default document” in the dialog box that appears. Available when the active window is a Gallery, Pasteboard or Preview window.
Close
Closes the active window. Closing all three primary windows (Find, Gallery and Pasteboard) also closes the catalog document. Tip: Selecting this item with the Option key held down closes all Fetch windows and the catalog document.
Catalog Info…
Displays information about the catalog document.
Set Default Document…
Sets the default document (catalog or project) to be opened by Fetch on startup.
Page Setup…
Displays a dialog box which allows you to set paper size orientation and other printing options. The available options depend on the printer you select using the Chooser and the printer driver you have installed.
Print…
Prints the contents of the active window. You can specify printing option (such as number of copies, etc.) in the dialog box that appears. The available options depend on what window type is currently active.
Quit
Closes all Fetch windows, any open catalog document and exits the Fetch application.
The Edit Menu
Use these commands to edit catalog information, copy file reference data and undo editing actions.
Undo
Reverses the most recent action you performed. May not be available because the last action cannot be reversed.
Cut
Deletes the selected text and stores it on the Clipboard, replacing any existing Clipboard contents.
Copy
Copies the selected text, the selected portion of the active Preview window or file referenced by the selection (or active window) to the Clipboard.
Copy Reference
Copies the file type and location of the source files referenced by the selected items (or active Preview or Info window) to the Clipboard.
Paste
Inserts the contents of the Clipboard at the insertion point or in place of the selection.
Select All
Selects (highlights) all text or catalog items in the active window.
Clear
Deletes the selection without placing it on the Clipboard. In the Gallery and Pasteboard windows, it removes the selected items without deleting them from the catalog.
Show Clipboard
Displays the contents of the Clipboard.
Keywords…
Use to edit the selected item’s keywords list.
Description…
Use to edit the selected item’s description.
Preferences…
Use to edit some of Fetch’s default settings. Refer to the section “The Preferences Window” for additional information.
The Item menu
Use these commands to perform various actions on selected catalog items or file referenced by an active Preview or Info window.
Get Info
Displays additional information about the files referenced by the current selection or active Preview window.
Preview
Displays the files referenced by the current selection or active Info window. Tip: Selecting this item with the Control key held down enables faster scrolling, panning and zooming of still images. (You can let go after the dog bone appears.)
Copy To Pasteboard
Appends the selected items in the Gallery window to the contents of the Pasteboard. Use the Pasteboard as a temporary workspace to store items of interest gathered from multiple Gallery windows.
Send Reference…
Sends message describing the file type and location of each selected item in the active Gallery or Pasteboard window to another cooperating application. The receiving application determines how this information is used.
Edit Original…
Opens file referenced by the selected item with another application assigned by you. Tip: Selecting this menu item with the Option key held down allows you to reassign which application is used to edit files of this type and creator.
Copy Original…
Copies files referenced by the selected items to another location.
Move Original…
Moves files referenced by the selected items to another location. If the destination volume is not the original volume, the files will be copied.
Delete Original…
Deletes files referenced by the selected items.
Save As Project…
Saves the selected items as a Fetch “project” document. Projects are an easy way to share or recall a collection of items without creating a new catalog.
The Search menu
Use these commands to create, modify and recall up to 29 of your own customized search definitions. Menu items appended with an ellipsis (…) indicates you must click the Find button manually after the selected definition is loaded.
Find…
Activates the Find window. Use the Find window to define and execute your search. Refer to the section “The Find Window” for additional information.
Define…
Use to create, edit or delete your own custom search definitions.
All
Sets the Find window definition to “Find All” and then performs a search.
Default
Loads the Find window with the “Default” definition and then optionally performs a search.
Previous
Restores the contents of the Find and Gallery window prior to the last search.

The View Menu
Use these commands to manipulate the Gallery, Pasteboard and Preview window views.
Text List
Displays the contents of the active Gallery or Pasteboard window as a text list with the selected item’s thumbnail, keywords list and description appearing across the bottom of the window.
Thumbnails
Displays the contents of the active Gallery or Pasteboard window as an array of thumbnail images with each item’s file name, file type, host volume and parent folder appearing below each picture.
by Order
Displays the items in the active window by the order they were added to the catalog. Fetch reverts to this view after each search.
by File Name
Displays the items in the active window alphabetically by file name.
by File Type
Displays the items in the active window alphabetically by file type.
by Volume
Displays the items in the active window alphabetically by volume name.
by Folder
Displays the items in the active window alphabetically by folder name.
Zoom In
Enlarges the image in the active Preview window up to 3200% of the original size. Fetch will automatically resize and reposition the Preview window to show as much of the enlarged image as possible. This function may be limited by available memory.
Zoom Out
Reduces the image in the active Preview window down to 12.5% of the original size. Fetch will automatically resize the Preview window as the image is reduced.
Actual Size
Displays the image in the active Preview window at its original (100% scale) size. Fetch will automatically resize and reposition the Preview window to show as much of the image as possible.
The Window Menu
Use these commands to access some of Fetch’s windows. Primary window types are Find, Gallery and Pasteboard. Any open Preview, Info or Catalog Info window is labeled as secondary and appears in the bottom portion of this menu.
Gallery
Activates the Gallery window. The Gallery window displays the results of your most recent search.
Pasteboard
Activates the Pasteboard window. Use the Pasteboard as a temporary workspace to store items of interest gathered from multiple Gallery windows.
The Find Window
Use the Find window to define and execute your search.
Find Items Whose…
Use this pop up menu to describe items you want to find. Looks for items whose criteria “matches” the text entered to the right.
Keyword
Searches for items by their keywords.
File Name
Searches for items by their filename.
File Type
Searches for items by their file type.
Volume
Searches for items by the name of the volume their stored on.
Search Modifiers
Use this pop up menu to modify a search by keyword or filename. Searching for items using the “matches” or “starts with” modifiers is usually faster then using the “contains” or “ends with” modifiers.
starts with
Looks for items whose criteria “starts with” the text entered to the right.
contains
Looks for items whose criteria “contains” the text entered to the right.
ends with
Looks for items whose criteria “ends with” the text entered to the right.
The Preferences Window
Use the Preferences window to edit some of Fetch’s default settings.
Default Window
Use this pop up menu to select which window you want to appear each time Fetch is launched.
Find…
By default, opens the Find window and loads the default search definition.
Gallery (Text List)
By default, performs a Find All search and displays the contents of the catalog in the Gallery window set to Text List view mode.
Gallery (Thumbnail)
By default, performs a Find All search and displays the catalog’s contents in the Gallery window set to Thumbnail view mode.
Definitions
Loads the Find window with this custom search definition and then optionally performs a find.
On Startup
Use this pop up menu to select what action to take when Fetch is launched.
Default Document
On startup, open the default catalog and activate the default window as specified in the Default Window user preference. Use the New or Open command in the File menu to select the default catalog.
Open Document
Upon startup, display the Open Catalog dialog box.
None
Upon startup do nothing.
Sort Keywords
Use this pop up menu to select how you want keyword lists sorted.
By Name
Sorts keywords alphabetically.
By Occurrences
Sorts keywords by their number of occurrences within the catalog.
Preview Window
Use this menu to select how images to large to fit on your screen are previewed.
Full Size
Opens preview windows at 100% scale (actual size). If an image does not fit entirely on your screen, the scroll bars will be activated.
Scaled to Fit
Opens preview windows scaled to fit on your screen. (They may cause some previews to take a little longer to appear.)
Dimensions
Use this menu to choose the default unit of measure for displaying image dimensions.
Dimensions may be displayed in inches ("), points (pt), picas (pi), centimeters (cm) or millimeters (mm).
